More information
I took a high school elective called 'Murder and Mayhem', during which we dissected crime films from 1930-2000, this class I blame directly for cementing my love of the big screen, and in particular film-noir, neo-noir and crime, or anything contrived and inspired by it. From thereon out, I began exploring film more broadly, including the works of my now-favourite directors -the simply magical Ingmar Bergman, as well as Akira Kurosawa and David Lynch; their methods of instilling ino the picture some sort of statement or critique on contemporary life never fails to mesmerize me. Films without the promise of a purpose disinterest me.
I visit the cinema regularly and although most new releases leave me bitterly disappointed, now and again I stumble on the most exquisite gems. My favourite films tend to be ensemble dramas, psychological Asian horrors, underground cult hits and above all, delightfully weird mainstream-independent-foreign-who-really-cares headfucks - if it has not confused me, it has failed. I've only really dabbled in the classics, the most I know is still about modern film - I'm trying to compensate by renting many a classical films during my rare spare time, but alas, when the weekend concludes, I continue life as a poor and very overworked Law/International Studies double degree student, part-time wage slave and full-time political junkie.
(Though as a result of the above, I am also something of a connoisseur of political film & documentaries.) And on an unrelated note, not knowing how much about myself I should write, the remaining essence of my life can be summed up with a fondness for general world history —particularly World War II and the Soviet Empire—, rich dark music, and clothes that smell like your grandma. Life's good.
